Encourage your child to handle objects with both hands while playing and exploring.

Create opportunities for your child to gross motor movement activities where he/she uses the whole body to move.

Let your child handle everyday objects in and around the house, e.g. play with kitchen utensils while meals are being prepared.

If you support a person in a wheelchair remember to warn him/her before starting to move the chair, e.g. by saying, “It’s time to go”.

Practice rhythms with your child by playing ‘table drums’. Repeat a simple rhyme while rhythmically drumming hands on the table.

Practice ‘choosing’ skills with your child by showing a favourite and uninteresting toy/object for your child to choose from. See how consistently he/she chooses the favourite object.

If your child is not ready for picture choosing collect objects relating to activities during the day to use as a ‘tactile timetable’. These are called Objects of Reference.
